Assuming

About 12 years ago I lived in Las Vegas, NV. I lived there for about 7 years. I worked at Mandalay Bay. I was a PBX operator then moved up as a supervisor. To those who don't know what a PBX operator is, it's just a person who transfers calls and pages a persons name over the intercom in the casino. You would think this would be a easy job, but I came to find out being a supervisor was a very hard job. This was my very first time of being a supervisor. I thought I knew what to do in case of emergencies but as I found out later that was not all that I was suppose to do in emergency situation.

Let me tell you what had happened. One night all of a sudden all of the computer systems went down. My first instict was to call the computer technicians to come in and fix the problem. I assumed that would be all I would need to do, but the next morning my boss asked me why didnt I call her to let her know what was going on. My assumption was to called the people to fix the problem and no need to involve anyone else, but come to find out the protocal is to notify my superior when something like this would happen. I was so embarassed and felt really dumb.

That day I learned a big lesson in life. Don't always assume. I could have asked questions on what I need to do in case of a emergency situation should arise. I have learned over the years, dont always assume because thats not always the case. If you dont know what to do you should double check with the person who knows and what you need to do. You know what that old saying says "Assuming makes an "A" out of you and me." I have learned over the years that particluar quote has come true more than once.
